Mooloolah Digital Horizons

Our vision is to implement a 1:1 device program that fosters equitable engagement and empowers students through purposeful enhancement of their learning. This approach will complement and support the continued development of fundamental skills, ensuring that technology is an enriching tool, not a replacement.

Digital learning will be student-centred, providing opportunities for both enrichment and extension, while accommodating the diverse needs of our students through differentiation. By personalising learning experiences, we aim to meet each student where they are, supporting their unique learning journeys.

This program will also encourage safe and meaningful collaboration among students in a digital environment, teaching them how to interact responsibly online. Students will develop critical and digital literacy, equipping them with essential skills for the future.

Our aim is to create engaging, purposeful learning experiences that inspire curiosity and exploration. Students will have the opportunity to investigate the world around them and integrate their learning flexibly, utilising multimodal approaches. Through this, we seek to cultivate a generation of learners who are not only academically proficient but also capable of adapting and thriving in a rapidly evolving digital world.

Participation Options

Our Mooloolah SS Digital Horizons program provides parents and carers with the choice of providing a personally-owned device (BYOx) or participating in the device hire scheme. In 2025 this program is starting with our Year 4 cohort and will continue through their future years while at Mooloolah SS, we intend to contunue in this same format in subsquent years. Families have been asked to nominate their preferance for hire or BYOx. Please feel free to speak with our school Principal if you have concerns about your student's participation in this program.

Parents and students should first read our Student BYOx and Device Hire Charter also found in our 'Forms and Documents' section of our website.

The final page of our Charter contains our consent form, which is to be signed and returned to the office for processing. This document is also distributed within our enrolment packages.

Hire

We have a pool of hire devices available for all students, these devices meet the minumum standard as per BYOx device list below and will be compatable for use at our school until your student finishes Year 6 here. Upon your indication of partipation in the hire scheme an SRS invoice will be sent and a device assigned to your student.

Bring Your Own Device - BYOx

Bring Your Own Device (BYOx) is an initiative supporting the delivery of a one-to-one device program. It is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their personally-owned laptop devices to access the department's information and communication technology (ICT) network.

While they remain personal devices, BYO devices are to be used exclusively for educational purposes while at school, as outlined in our Student BYOx and Device Hire Charter.

Connecting to the BYOx System

Once the Charter has been read, signed and returned to our office , our IT staff will have the associated network account added to the BYOx system. From there, devices can be onboarded at home by following our instructional videos to the right of the screen. Additonal help to setup devices will be available at school every Tuesday morning in the library by our school techical officer.

Minimum BYOx Specs (2025)

Below are the minimum specifications for BYO devices. Devices that do not meet these criteria will not be able to be joined to our network, or will provide performance inadequate for school.

Further Requirements

Windows S Mode

Many new Windows devices will come with Windows activated in "S Mode". Student BYO devices are required to disable this so that they can access applications and printers that are managed by the school.

S Mode will only allow programs to be installed on the device that have been downloaded through the Microsoft Store. Click here for more information about S Mode from Microsoft's website. External link

Refurbished Devices

You may consider purchasing a refurbished or preowned device. Please note the specifications above are general in nature and reflect those of new devices. For more relevant specification requirements for older devices, please contact the Mooloolah SS IT Department via email – ITSupport@mooloolahss.eq.edu.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cost to use our BYOx network?

No, there is no cost as of 2025. For students to have access to the BYOx network, parents/guardians must read and sign the BYOx Charter included with enrolment packages/subject selection packages each year.

Do I need to purchase Microsoft Office?

No, the Department of Education provides a fully paid version of Microsoft Office 365 to all students.

Can a BYOx be charged at school?

The school DOES NOT allow students to charge devices, this is due to the trip hazard and potential fire/electrical risk from a charger being plugged in. Chargers may be confiscated if found in use.

What is involved in connecting a BYOx to the school network?

Once you have signed and submitted your Charter, you will have access to begin the BYOx "on-boarding" process. Student devices can then be connected at home by following the instructional video above, or by accessing the Student Portal (student access only).

Onboarding devices involves enrolment in the Departments Mobile Device Management system (MDM) Microsoft Intune. Once enrolled, a digital certificate is downloaded onto the device to allow access to the wireless network. This certificate is similar to a regular Wi-Fi password, only instead the password is a unique cryptographic key linked to student network accounts. You are free to "unenroll" from this system at any time on your device.
